1 · It's the fans, not the chips

The chips inside a miner are nearly silent. The noise comes from what keeps them alive: a wall of small fans running flat out.

A working miner turns a kilowatt or two of electricity into heat, and that heat has to leave fast or the chips fry. So the miner carries high-speed fans running flat out, day and night. The result sits around 75 decibels, closer to a vacuum cleaner that never switches off than anything you'd want indoors. It isn't a fault, it's the cooling doing its job, which is exactly why the noise is so stubborn: quiet the fans carelessly and you overheat the miner.

2 · The fixes that half-work

Search how to quiet a miner and you get the same handful of tricks. Each helps a little, and each has a catch.

Move it to a garage or basement and you've relocated the noise, not removed it, plus you're now running cables and warming a space you don't use. Swap the stock fans for quieter ones and you can genuinely drop the noise, though a random swap risks higher temperatures and your warranty. A kit built for your exact model is the version that holds up. Build a sound-dampening box and you muffle it while choking the airflow the miner needs to survive. Go all the way to immersion or hydro cooling and it does get genuinely quiet, but now you're maintaining fluid, pumps and radiators, which is a project, not a quick fix. None of these are wrong. They're trade-offs, and most people badly underestimate the fiddling.

Most of these routes trade noise for heat, effort, or risk. Sometimes that's worth it. Often it isn't.

3 · How loud is loud, really?

Decibels aren't intuitive, and the scale isn't linear. A few numbers make the whole problem click.

A standard air-cooled miner runs around 75 decibels. Normal conversation is about 60. A miner built to run quiet sits near 50, and a genuinely quiet room is around 30. Because decibels are logarithmic, dropping from 75 to 50 isn't a small trim, it's the difference between a miner you can't ignore and one you can sit in the same room as. That target, somewhere around 50, is what "quiet" has to mean for a miner running in a home.
