How Many Bitcoin Are Left to Mine?

Bitcoin has a hard limit of 21 million coins, and most of them already exist. Here is how many are left, why the pace keeps slowing, and what it means if you want to earn some yourself.

21 million. That is the entire supply, forever. No central bank can print more. The code decides, and the code says 21 million.
1 · How much is already mined

Most of the Bitcoin that will ever exist is already here

Out of a fixed cap of 21 million coins, roughly 19.9 million have already been mined. That is about 94 percent of every Bitcoin that will ever exist, dug out in a little over fifteen years. What is left is only around 1.1 million coins, and they will trickle out slowly over the next hundred-odd years.

So the honest headline is simple. We are most of the way there already.

2 · Why the last coins take a century

The last coins will take more than a century

Here is the part that surprises people. If 94 percent came out in fifteen years, why will the final slice take until roughly the year 2140? The answer is built into the code. Every four years the reward miners earn for each block is cut in half, so the flow of new coins keeps shrinking. Fewer coins per block stretches the remaining supply into a long, slow tail.

Fast at the start, glacial at the end. That is Bitcoin's issuance working exactly as designed.

3 · The halving tightens the tap

The halving is why the tap keeps tightening

When Bitcoin launched in 2009, each block paid 50 BTC. In 2012 that dropped to 25, then 12.5 in 2016, 6.25 in 2020, and 3.125 after the April 2024 halving. The next one, expected around 2028, takes it to roughly 1.56 BTC. Each cut halves the new supply, and there are only 32 halvings in total before the reward rounds all the way down to zero.

That staircase down is the whole reason 21 million is a hard ceiling, not a rough target.

Every four years or so, the reward for each block is cut in half. It started at 50 BTC in 2009 and keeps dropping toward zero around the year 2140.

4 · Left to mine is not left to own

Left to mine is not the same as left to own

Two things are worth keeping apart. The roughly 1.1 million unmined coins are the only genuinely new supply left. But a big chunk of the coins already mined are effectively gone, lost to forgotten passwords, dead hard drives, and early holders who disappeared. Estimates vary, yet a few million coins are likely lost for good, which quietly makes the coins in real circulation even scarcer than the headline numbers suggest.

So the Bitcoin still up for grabs is rarer than the raw 21 million figure makes it look.

Every halving makes new coins twice as scarce
Every halving makes new coins twice as scarce The reward has fallen from 50 to 3.125 BTC per block, and it keeps going.
5 · Can you still mine today

Yes, you can still mine, but the game has changed

You do not need to catch the last coins to take part. Every block still pays a reward plus the fees from the transactions inside it, and miners compete for that around the clock. What has changed is that mining is now an industrial game of cheap electricity and efficient machines. For someone at home, the smart angle is not out-hashing a data center, it is running a modern miner that also heats your home, so the same electricity does two jobs at once.

The coins keep getting scarcer. The reason to run a miner at home does not.

The 30-second recap

  1. Bitcoin's supply is capped at 21 million coins, permanently
  2. Around 19.9 million already exist, leaving roughly 1.1 million to mine
  3. The halving keeps cutting new supply, stretching the last coins to about 2140
  4. Millions of mined coins are likely lost, tightening real supply further
  5. You can still take part, best done with a miner that also heats your space
